Is This Real Life?

We've finally moved into our flat and filled it with food and basic necessities, so we decided to be tourists for the day. Despite the fact that we will be doing our best to get the true Londoner experience over the next four months, we've decided to do a few touristy things as well.

Today's destination was the Guard Mount - commonly known as the changing of the guard - at Buckingham Palace. Due to the crowds and the umbrellas (in typical London fashion, it was a bit damp outside), we couldn't see much, and even resorted to lifting Christina onto Casey's shoulders for photography purposes. Soon, a marching band began to play what I can only describe as exactly what you would expect to hear in the courtyard of a royal palace.

Just a few moments later, though, they switched to jazz songs. Not what we'd expected, but certainly enjoyable. Sarcastically, I turned to my flatmates and asked, "What are they going to play next, Disney music," at which they all laughed. Lo and behold, within 5 minutes I recognized the tune of zippity-doo-dah, which quickly morphed into a medley of songs from my childhood. I'll upload a video when I can to my youtube channel.

Certainly an unexpected turn, but not an unpleasant one! We all shared some laughs, and enjoyed the selection immensely.

Have you ever been surprised by a tourist destination? Let me know!
